The objective of our England Tour is to give us an overview of life in England from Roman times (2000 years ago) through Norman times (1000 years ago) to Victorian times (150 years ago) to the present day. Our time in England is concentrated on the south coast, an area sometimes referred to as the sunniest in Britain. At various times throughout the tour, including at dinner or during our free day, friendships form as local family and friends stop by or join our group.
Our week is centered in the Victorian seaside city of Eastbourne. The stately Imperial Hotel is our base. We are located in historic 1066 Country where we visit the site of the Battle of Hastings, Battle Abbey, and the village of Battle. In Pevensey, the landing place of William the Conqueror’s army, we see Pevensey Castle, rebuilt by the Normans in the 12th century, having been first established as a Roman fort and settlement in the 4th century.
Although Eastbourne is a bustling city, within the radius of our hotel are the rolling hills of the English countryside, medieval villages, and breathtaking views of the English Channel. A bit further away is the picturesque and nearly intact 14th century Bodium Castle. In the other direction is the city of Brighton, home to the Royal Pavilion, and at Fishbourne, the site of the Roman Palace has some of the most well preserved mosaic tile floor in the United Kingdom.
Our tour has a built-in free day, where there are a number of places to go and things to do on our own and at our own cost. Some suggestions include: Take a train to London for a day of sightseeing; ride the coastal bus (public transportation) to view the cliffs at Beachy Head; visit a local winery, simply stay in Eastbourne to shop and have tea, or hire private transportation to drive to Stonehenge or Salisbury Cathedral. Or gather a small group together to go to a location of common interest. Nigel, Jan, and Ray help organize and coordinate the free day.
After a day on the road, take time for a stroll along Eastbourne’s famous seaside promenade, just across from our hotel. Enjoy an ice cream cone or listen to music in the bandstand. Rather stay inside? There is also entertainment for all guests at the hotel each evening after dinner.
