Poingdestre Family History Tours
South of England – Isle of Jersey – Normandy/Paris
Tour Two - Jersey
June 12-19, 2017
Subject to change
The objectives of our Jersey Tour are to experience the history and culture of the place where our Poingdestre ancestors were born, lived, and died; to meet people who live there now, and to visit Swan Farm, the manorial home of the Poingdestre family and where, we believe, George Poindexter was born. The Isle of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, is located 85 miles off the coast of southern England and just 14 miles off the west coast of Normandy.
One of the tour’s highlights is our visit to Swan Farm, built around 1490, now a private home, but then the home of the Poingdestre family. We see the Fief ès Poingdestres, the north coast location of the former Poingdestre feudal lands. We also attend service at St. Saviour Parish Church, the Poingdestre family’s church, and see where Jean Poingdestre (1608-1691) is buried. Among the many other sites we see are St. Ouen’s Manor, the private home of the Isle of Jersey’s prominent de Carteret family, the Neolithic dolmen La Hougue Bie, and Mont Orgueil, with its cliff top castle where we can look across the Channel to see Normandy.
On our walking tour of St. Helier, we see the 11th century Parish Church; Royal Square; the Central Market, (opened in 1882 and a simply delightful place to explore), and Liberation Square, where the end of the World War II occupation of Jersey was first celebrated in 1945. We may also make a stop at the bookshop at the Société Jersiaise, by far the best place to buy books on Jersey history, or visit the Jersey Archive, the island’s research center and national repository.
During our bus tours, we become familiar with all of the 12 parishes (counties) of Jersey, each with its own unique histories, views and sites. We travel the 45 square mile island from coast-to-coast-to-coast-to-coast and all in between. On the extreme southwestern coast, we see Corbière Lighthouse, a beacon for sailors since the 1870s. Jersey’s beautiful countryside reveals to us stone farmhouses, green pastures, and of course the gentle Jersey cows. There are many places to choose to visit in Jersey, and we plan each day accordingly. Before leaving Jersey, we find ways to keep in touch with our new friends and say adieu before we depart early the next morning.
