About the Tour
We will experience the history and culture of the place where our Poingdestre ancestors were born, lived, and died. We will meet people who live there now, and visit homes of the Poingdestre family including Swan Farm, where we believe George Poindexter was born. The Isle of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, is located about 14 miles off the west coast of Normandy.
We see the land that was once the Fief ès Poingdestres, the north coast location of the former Poingdestre feudal lands. We will visit St. Saviour Parish Church, the Poingdestre family’s church, and where Jean Poingdestre (1608-1691) and others are entombed. Some of the other sites we see will include St. Ouen’s Manor, the private home of the Isle of Jersey’s de Carteret family, prominent family for centuries; the Neolithic dolmen La Hougue Bie, and Mont Orgueil with its cliff top castle where we can look across the Channel to see Normandy.
On our walking tour of St. Helier (Jersey's capital), we will visit the 11th century St. Helier Parish Church, Royal Square, the Central Market (local produce, opened in 1882 and a simply delightful place to explore), and Liberation Square where the end of the World War II occupation of Jersey was first celebrated in 1945. We'll make a stop at the bookshop at the Société Jersiaise, by far the best place to buy books on Jersey history and view a short film about Jersey at the Jersey Museum.
During our daily bus tours, we become familiar with all of the 12 parishes (counties) of Jersey, each with its own unique history, views, and sites. We travel the 45 square mile island from coast-to-coast-to-coast-to-coast and all in between. On the extreme southwestern coast, we see Corbière Lighthouse, a beacon for sailors since the 1870s. Jersey’s beautiful countryside reveals to us stone farmhouses, green pastures, and of course the gentle Jersey cows.
Upon your arrival in Jersey, you will have time for a nap and/or shower to refresh from your flight before we all meet for dinner at the hotel. During or after dinner we will have a short meet and greet to review the week's itinerary.
